Description:

Libyan Desert Glass was formed when a meteorite impacted this corner of the Sahara a long time ago. The shock and the heat from the impact turned the sand into lumps of glass. The meteorite has never been found, and might still be hiding under the sand, but the dark streaks found in some pieces of glass might be dust from the meteorite.

A very complicated specimen. And it has everything you are likely to see on Libyan glass: one polished face, and one frosted, a great many crystals of crystobalite, grains of sand, and holes, and nooks and crannies. And one chip. And lost in all that, the longest "worm hole" I have seen: almost 30mm long  (see bottom picture).

About 92mm long, and 50mm wide.

Please note: The area of south-west Egypt where Libyan Glass can be found, has now been closed to any exploration by the Egyptian government for the last 4 years, with no change of policy in sight, so our stock cannot be replenish, and is dwindling!.
