Registry: AE068 Mineral Name: Huizopa Source: Chihuahua, Mexico Mineral Size: 1909g Sale Price: $19,000.00 Description:
This is the Annual Fundraiser Specimen for the Monnig Collection.
The Monnig Collection actually has two full slices of Huizopa, so Dr. Ehlmann chose the smaller one, and the funds raised by this sale will allow him to keep on buying new specimens, so the Monnig Collection will keep on growing.
One mass of 108.5kg and four smaller ones were found in 1907 in a ruin near Huizopa (Guerrero District, Chihuahua, Mexico), they were then brought to Chihuahua for sale as silver ore. The main mass was then seen in 1932 in the State Mines Exhibit, in Chihuahua City. And most of it is still there in a museum.
Described by V. F. Buchwald as a fine Octahedrite, severely deformed, with some shock melting and recrystallisation.
In an un-dated pamphlet, written by Nininger while he was in Denver and apparently in an attempt to sell his collection, he lists several pieces of the Huizopa meteorite and describes his trip to Mexico in 1931, where he found the main mass in chihuahua and received a piece of it in a trade. However this slice does not appear to be from what Nininger received, since it comes with a Ward label.
This full slice is 31cm long, 16cm at the widest and about 6 mm thick.
In addition to the Monnig label, the buyer will receive the Ward label and a copy of the relevant pages in H.H. Nininger's pamphlet.
